Samsung I8000 Omnia II review

Samsung's top tier of Omnia devices is populated by some seriously heavy-hitters - first the 720p video recording Omnia HD and now the Omnia II - with its best-in-the-business display, WM 6.5, zippy processor and preloaded software galore, it will certainly win the hearts and minds of Windows Mobile fans.

It's no secret that the Samsung Omnia II has the HTC Touch Diamond2 in its sights. The Omnia II has several advantages, not the least of which is the amazing 3.7" AMOLED WVGA display. For the acronym-allergic - WVGA means 480 x 800 pixels resolution, which several years ago might have been considered acceptable for a computer monitor. That resolution is not so uncommon today, the exciting part here is "AMOLED" - active matrix organic LED. Or in plain English - brilliant picture quality.

It doesn't end there - the 800MHz CPU is one of the speediest around and the available capacities of up to 16GB built-in memory and up to 32GB external storage via microSD card offer more than enough memory expansion. There's Wi-Fi and GPS, the autofocus camera shoots 5MP stills and D1 video at 30fps and has dual-LED flash, there's DivX playback out of the box and HSDPA and HSUPA push the phone to great wireless speeds.

Key features:

  • 3.7-inch 65K-color resistive AMOLED touchscreen, 480 x 800 pixels
  • Windows Mobile 6.5 with TouchWiz UI 2.0 and Media Gate 3D
  • Samsung S3C6410 800MHz processor; HW Graphic Accelerator
  • 256MB RAM
  • 5 megapixel auto focus camera with LED flash, geotagging, face detection, smile shot, image stabilizer, Wide Dynamic Range (WDR)
  • Records video in D1@30fps, QVGA slow-mo video recording
  • Tri-band 3G with HSDPA (7.2Mbps) and HSUPA (5.76 Mbps) support
  • Quad-band GSM support
  • Smart dialing
  • Wi-Fi with DLNA technology
  • Built-in GPS with A-GPS functionality
  • 2/8/16GB internal memory
  • microSD card slot (up to 32GB)
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Bluetooth and USB v2.0
  • 3.5mm standard audio jack
  • TV-out functionality
  • DNSe audio technology and SRS sound effect
  • DivX/XviD video playback
  • Proximity sensor for screen auto turn-off and ambient light sensor
  • Accelerometer sensor for automatic UI rotation, turn-to-mute and motion-based gaming
  • Office document editor
  • Full Flash support in the web browser

Main disadvantages:

  • No xenon flash
  • No camera lens cover
  • 65K color limitation of display results in banding in color gradients
  • microSD slot is under the back cover
  • Browser has issues with Flash support

Well, it seem Nokia have something even more exciting to announce at the upcoming Nokia World, so they’ve decided to fire early with the N900 tablet/smartphone announcement. N900 is a continuation of Nokia Nseries tablets. This time they’ve stepped out of the ultra portable computing turf and have ventured in the territory of Nokia Communicators.

Running on the new Linux-based Maemo 5 OS, the Nokia N900 power lies in the capable multi-tasking, which should make it stand out even among the ranks of the Symbian smartphones. According to Nokia reps, however, the new Maemo device is not meant to compete with the Nokia Symbian smartphones, but instead cater for different market needs.

With Nokia N900 you’ve got around-the-clock connectivity thanks to Wi-Fi and HSPA. The N900 offers phone features as well allowing full-featured telephony.

The Nokia N900 packs a powerful ARM Cortex-A8 CPU much like the Apple iPhone 3GS, Palm Pre and Samsug Omnia HD and offers hardware graphics acceleration and 256MB RAM.

Switching between applications is simple, as all running content is constantly available through the dashboard. The panoramic homescreen can be fully personalized with favorite shortcuts, widgets and applications. We wonder however how many of those features will be available in portrait mode though, as Maemo is Tablet OS that's hardly been put to use in portrait mode before.

Interaction with the handset is available through the large 3.5-inch touchscreen display with a WVGA resolution (800 x 480 pixels) and the 3-row QWERTY keypad. The touch screen also offers a virtual on-screen keyboard and operating with a stylus is possible, though one doesn’t seem to be included with the N900 itself.

hanks to the web browser powered by Mozilla technology, websites should look just as they do on a desktop computer. Online videos and interactive applications are not a problem as the Maemo OS has full Adobe Flash 9.4 support.

The Nokia N900 has 32GB of storage, which is expandable up to 48GB via a microSD card. Other features include a GPS receiver with Ovi Maps, an FM transmitter, a 3.5mm audio jack with TV-out function, Bluetooth and DivX/XviD video playback support.

For photography on the go, the Maemo software and the N900 come with a new tag cloud user interface that helps users tag and share photos and videos more easily. The 5 megapixel with Carl Zeiss optics is also capable of recording 16:9 video with a resolution of up to 848x480 pixels@25fps.

Here's the official demo video of the Nokia N900 where you can check how the new cloud photo tagging system works among other things:

Bebook Portable E-book Reader Announced

his is one market that has not really kicked off in India, but I feel it has potential. There are higher end PMPs that play all kinds of media including ebook pdfs, though having a dedicated device, with adherent features is always a gadget lover's preference. Thus these ebook readers seem very attractive. First there was the Kindle, highly promoted by Amazon, and now we have the new Bebook by a company called Endless Ideas.

It supportvarious digital document formats such as .doc, .txt, .pdf, .jpg, .htm and .rtf files. You can carry books and documents into a device which is the size of a single book. It has E-paper and patent E-ink technology that claims to consume low power. The books can be read even in bright sunlight. It has Wi-Fi and USB connectivity. The pricing and availability is not yet announced, so stay tuned.

BlackBerry Storm 2

The competition in the SMART phone market just got tuff with announcement of new BlackBerry Strom 2. The latest shots of the BlackBerry Storm 2 are making rounds with a few of the specs being confirmed along with them. So far the reports are saying that the Storm 2 will be running on BlackBerry OS version 5.1. Two versions are going to be launched – the 9520 for Vodafone customers in Germany and the 9550 Storm 2. Wi-Fi is definitely on board this time which I can honestly say will be welcomed with open palms.

The overall design doesn’t really seem to be too different and I have no issues with that. To give it a sleeker impression RIM has done away with the four buttons under the display replacing the same with touch sensitive options instead.

Apple to launch tablet PC

The major music labels are planning a new digital album format that will debut with a tablet-like personal computer from Apple Inc in September, people familiar with the plans said.
The labels are attempting to revive the multi-track album format with new software that packages songs, traditional album liner notes, music videos, and other interactive extras as part of a premium-priced package.

The music industry first proposed the idea of an enhanced album format to Apple in 2007, according to two people who said the labels have been separately working on a project code-named "CMX".

The labels, including EMI Group, Sony Corp's Sony Music Entertainment, Vivendi's Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group had planned to roll out the new album format to all digital retailers this November.

But Apple decided to design its own version of an interactive album, which is expected to be launched with its new unnamed tablet-like device this fall, the sources said.

The Apple album project has been code-named 'Cocktail' and the format is expected to work with other Apple devices like the iPhone and iPod.
Industry sources said Chief Executive Steve Jobs would likely unveil the new device at an Apple event in September. Apple declined to aying the company does not respond to rumors and speculation. News of Apple and the label's plan was first reported by the Financial Times The partnership between Apple and the music labels is tinged with irony as it was the technology company that effectively marked the end of the multitrack album format in 2003, when it opened up its iTunes Music Store.

In early negotiations, Jobs made the labels agree to allow customers to buy any individual track they wanted from an album, in a bid to simplify the purchase process.

But record companies are desperate to breathe new life into the album format, which was responsible for the vast majority of profits when sales were primarily in compact discs.

All music companies have seen their revenues plummet as fans who buy music online choose the 99 cent-priced track they want rather than invest in an album which is typically priced around $8 to $10.

The new interactive format, which could feature extras like interviews with the artist while making the album, would be sold at a higher price than digital albums now. Insiders said there is early evidence from current bundling experiments than fans are prepared to spend more for high quality content.

"Almost every time we've sold product with extras at a premium price it outsells the normal priced product," said one label executive who asked not to be named while the companies are still in talks.

Now App will rate your sexual performance

Want to measure your performance in the sack? Well, all you need to do is to download a new iPhone application and see how competent you are.
The Passion app uses the phone’s accelerometer to sense motion, as well as the device’s microphone and timer. Users will just have to place the phone on the bed before intercourse, and at the end of the horizontal dance, the phone will give a rating out of 10 based on three criteria -- duration, orgasm and activity.

One can upload the scores and compare to those of other people around the world. In fact, the high scores list also gives you a chance to brag about it.

In case a person is not happy with the score, there is an option of “try again”. Priced at $4.99 (Rs 240 approx), the app’s creator Chris Alvares, said the idea came up as a joke between his co-workers.

“It’s not a hoax, it actually works! I figured out an algorithm that I could use with the iPhone’s features,” he said.

A brief study on risk taking personality attributes

Risk Taking:

Contemporary theorists stress the role of personality traits in differentiating between people who love taking risks and those who are risk averse. Personality traits are underlying characteristics of an individual that are relatively stable over time, and explain regularities in people's behaviors risk taking is also a willingness to take chance to make any decision by an individual. It basically depends on motivation that is if the person is highly motivated he takes more risky decisions and if the person is less motivated then le is likely to take less risky decisions. Some people are motivated more by fear whereas some people are motivated more by pleasure.

So how do personality traits help us to understand risk taking behavior? Basically we can examine whether these dimensions of personality help us to predict risk taking behaviors, and if so construct a psychological profile of risk taking. A large body of research suggests that risk takers tend to be higher in the narrow "Sensation Seeking" trait, a small element of the broader Psychoticism vs. Humaneness trait. Marvin Zuckerman initially developed the theory of Sensation Seeking in the 1950s following a series of sensory deprivation experiments. He began to suspect that the people who volunteered for these experiments might share a similar set of personality characteristics. These individuals appeared to be especially venturesome and inquisitive, eager to have new and exciting experiences even if they did contain a degree of social or physical risk. A large number of studies have shown that people who engage in a range of high risk behaviors tend to be high Sensation Seekers. Studies involving identical twins that are reared apart suggest that a large proportion of Sensation Seeking is genetically determined (approximately 60%), and exciting new studies have begun to identify the specific genes that regulate this need. On average men tend to be higher in Sensation Seeking than women, and Sensation Seeking also tends to decline with age. This goes some way to explain why many people who take potentially fatal risks are young men. However it should be remembered that many women are high Sensation Seekers, and an increasing number of women participate in high risk sports and take health risks such as smoking and binge drinking.

What effect does positive and negative feedback about past risk taking have on the future risk taking of decision makers? The results of an experimental study show that subjects who are led to believe they are very competent at decision making see more opportunities in a risky choice and take more risks. Those who are led to believe they are not very competent see more threats and take fewer risks. Hence risk can be categorized into two that is :

a) Higher Risk Taking

b) Lower Risk Taking

Differences between Higher risk taking (HRT) and Lower risk taking (LRT):

Higher Risk Taking

Lower Risk TakingS

Higher risk taking person are willing to take more chance.

Lower risk taking person are willing to take less chance

Higher risk taking person use less information and usually take rapid decision.

Lower risk taking person acquire more information and make less risky decision.

Higher risk taking person exhibits better performance on job which require rapid decision.

Lower risk taking person are much more involve in job which require less rapid decision.

think twice before pressing Ctrl+C

Here is the information regarding how to minimize risk while surfing online. Every-time you do a harmless keyboard shortcut Ctrl+C in your computer, the text you copy online may be stolen on the web. his copied data is accessible on the Internet when you visit websites that use a combination of javascript and ASP or any server-side-language like jsp, php, from which the data that you copy can be transferred to another server. Most websites are javascript enabled.
Not convinced? Try copying some text and just visit sourcecodesworld.com/special/clipboard.asp, a website that provides free source codes and projects. You necessarily need not even press the ‘paste’ button.

The ‘paste’ happens automatically. The website just provides an example of what could potentially happen to you, especially if you have copied your credit card details, bank details or any other sensitive information.

so next time before using keyboard shortcut be careful. it is advised to not to use Ctrl+C while copying important informations.
